Hometown Source - Priscilla Lord Faris Files for Candidacy for U. S. Senate

The Secretary of State's Office doors swung shut at 5 p.m. on Tuesday (July 15) in St. Paul but not before cavalcade of candidates filed for a host of state and federal offices.

Eighteen candidates — seven Independence Party candidates alone — filed for U.S. Senate.

One addition to the DFL ranks was Priscilla Lord Faris, the daughter of Miles Lord who served three terms as Minnesota Attorney General.

"It is our opinion it's faltering somewhat — it's lagging behind in the polls," said Faris of the DFL-endorsed U.S. Senate candidacy of comedian Al Franken.

An attorney, Faris portrayed herself as offering "hope and solutions."

"I think I can win because I'm very passionate," she said.

U.S. Senator Norm Coleman, R-St. Paul, faces a primary challenge from little known Republican challenger Jack Shepard.

Franken faces primary challenges from six DFL candidate, Faris and frequent candidates Ole Savior and Dick Franson among others.

In the races for U.S. House in 2nd Congressional District incumbent Congressman John Kline, R-Lakeville, and DFL-endorsed challenger Steve Sarvi of Watertown, face no other challengers than each other.

Neither candidate faces a primary contest.

Not so in the 6th Congressional District.

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, R-Stillwater, faces a challenge from St. John's University college professor Aubrey Immelman of Sartell.

Born in South Africa, Immelman, 52, is a security expert who confers internationally on the topics of national security and terrorism, he explained.

"I just don't think she's the person to bring unity," Immelman said Bachmann.

In a Democratic-controlled Washington Bachmann, if reelected, would have virtually no voice, he argjued.

"I come without any political baggage," said Immelman.

Bob Anderson, of Woodbury, is the sole Independnece Party candidate in the 6th District contest.

Former Ventura Administration commissioner of transporation Elwyn Tinklenberg is the sole Democrat running in the race.

In other congressinal races, 8th Congressional District Congressman James Oberstar, D-Chisholm, faces Republican Michael Cummins — Cummins does not list an address on his affidavit of candidacy.

Four canidates filed for office in the 3rd Congressional District, including DFL and Republican endorsed candidates Ashwin Madia and Erik Paulsen, respectively.

Madia is from Maple Grove and Paulsen from Eden Prairie.

Two Independence Party canidates, David Dillon of Maple Grove and Steev Ramsdell of Eden Prairie, also filed in the 3rd and will face each other in the primary.
